Ernest Hemingway was first of all a journalist, who was an ambulance driver in World War I and injured in Italy. Afterwards, his taste for adventure drew him to be a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War. Whilst still working as a journalist he published literary novels and short story collections in a very direct, literal style, such as "In Our Time" in 1925, "A Farewell to Arms" in 1929, "For Whom the Bell Tolls" in 1941,and "The Old Man and the Sea" in 1952.
